Fever Land Sheri Sam as Assistant GM: Who She Is and Why Indiana Needs Her

LiveWire Sports Media · Oct 31, 2026

The Indiana Fever are hiring Sheri Sam, a 10-year WNBA veteran and Portland Trail Blazers scouting manager, as assistant general manager focused on scouting and analytics. IndyStar’s Chloe Peterson first reported the move Friday, Oct. 30, citing sources, and ESPN reported that a source confirmed it. Sam starts Monday, Nov. 2.

The hire

Chole Peterson reported that Sam will work mainly with the Fever’s scouting staff and coaching staff on personnel and talent identification. In the short term, she will scout the NCAA women’s basketball season, which begins Sunday. She comes to Indiana from the Trail Blazers, where she has been scouting manager since March 2022 (Yahoo Sports, citing IndyStar; TSN, citing ESPN).

Sources told IndyStar the conversations about her joining began over the summer, before the Fever’s Oct. 23 front-office shake-up.

Several things are not known. The reports we read include no quotes from Sam or the Fever. There is no timeline for hiring a general manager. And it is unclear who Sam will report to once a GM is named.

Who Sheri Sam is

Sam, 52, was born May 5, 1974, in Lafayette, Louisiana, and attended Acadiana High School (Wikipedia). She went on to Vanderbilt, where she earned a degree in human and organizational development in 1996.

Her playing résumé covers a 15-year professional career: three seasons in the American Basketball League, 10 in the WNBA, and 12 seasons overseas, according to her Trail Blazers bio. She won WNBA titles with Seattle in 2004 and Detroit in 2008.

Off the court she has been a college assistant coach, a high school athletic director, a nonprofit leader and, since 2022, an NBA scouting manager. IndyStar also reported that she holds a global management certificate from NYU and an NBA CBA certification.

Vanderbilt: a four-year scoring leader

At Vanderbilt from 1992 to 1996, Sam scored 1,537 career points, seventh on the school’s all-time list, and averaged 20.4 points as a senior in 1996. The Commodores reached the NCAA Tournament in all four of her seasons, including the 1993 Final Four during her freshman year and the 1996 Elite Eight (Vanderbilt Athletics).

Her honors include two All-SEC selections (1995 and 1996), the 1995 SEC Tournament MVP award, 1996 AP third-team All-American and a finalist spot for the 1996 Naismith Trophy. Her Trail Blazers bio lists her in the Vanderbilt Athletic Hall of Fame; we could not confirm that on Vanderbilt’s own page.

A note on accuracy: Vanderbilt credits the 1993 Final Four to her freshman season, so she played on that team rather than led it.

A pro career across seven WNBA teams

Sam played in the ABL for the San Jose Lasers from 1997 to 1999, then was drafted 20th overall, in the second round, by the Orlando Miracle in the 1999 WNBA Draft. Her WNBA stops, in order:

  • Orlando Miracle (1999)
  • Miami Sol (2000–2002), where she was a 2002 All-Star
  • Minnesota Lynx (2003)
  • Seattle Storm (2004), a championship season
  • Charlotte Sting (2005–2006)
  • Indiana Fever (2007)
  • Detroit Shock (2008), a championship season

Her Trail Blazers bio also lists three ABL All-Star appearances and a 1996 Jones Cup gold medal with Team USA. She played overseas in Israel and Greece, per Wikipedia.

From coach to administrator to Blazers scout

After her playing days, Sam was an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois (2013–17, per her Blazers bio; some sources list 2014). She then worked as an athletic director and advancement officer at Mercy High School in San Francisco (2017–19) and The Bay School of San Francisco (2019–20), and became managing director of the Northern California PGA Foundation in 2020 (Wikipedia).

She returned to basketball in March 2022 as the Trail Blazers’ scouting manager. Her bio says she works with the front office to evaluate college and professional players and coordinates pre-draft scouting and the scouting of draft prospects through the season. This April she also began work as a Portland Fire studio analyst for Fox 12 Plus.

In an ESPN profile, Sam described what the return meant to her: “Basketball has been such a big part of my life. It’s a passion. I didn’t know I missed it as much when I wasn’t in it until I got back in it.”

ESPN also reported that Blazers general manager Joe Cronin offered her a choice: a scout role based in San Francisco, or the scouting manager job in Portland. She took the Portland role because it let her learn how strategy and the business side work inside a front office.

The Fever role mirrors that job. Her Portland title was scouting manager, focused on player evaluation and pre-draft scouting. In Indiana she is assistant GM, focused on scouting and analytics, working with the scouting and coaching staffs.

Why the Fever need her now

The timing explains the hire. The Fever have no general manager and no team president after Kelly Krauskopf stepped down and Amber Cox was fired, and there is no announced timeline to name a GM (Yahoo Sports). The scouting work still has to get done.

The roster math adds pressure. Sports Illustrated reported that Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston are the building blocks, but salary cap space is tight and much of the bench may be filled with near-minimum contracts, which makes finding affordable talent through scouting critical. Kelsey Mitchell’s free agency is the first major decision, per the same report (SI).

The calendar is also short. The NCAA women’s season starts Sunday, and Sam is expected to begin by scouting it.

Sam is not the only addition. The Fever also hired Vernard Hollins as a scout, and sources told IndyStar the hires are part of a broader push to improve the team’s scouting and player evaluation.
